Felix Bode, a 2024 graduate of the BA in Painting and Printmaking at The Glasgow School of Art, is a Berlin-based artist whose practice delves into the growing space between figuration and abstraction— the counterpart of the fading connection humans have to the material world. The monumental paintings exhibited during the Degree Show, a reflection on the detached inner gaze of travelers lost in thought, won the RSA New Contemporaries Award and the Arts Thread Global Graduate Award 2024.
Contemporary life exists in an era where proximity can be regulated according to the individual desire. Technology has blurred the limits of time and space, making distance become increasingly abstract. The paintings of Felix Bode engage with this abstraction both formally and conceptually. They explore the tension between the illusion of closeness and accessibility, as suggested by modern life, and the more complex reality where certain distances remain unattainable.


Through a nuanced and deliberate use of the medium, the artist incorporates in the same composition both an illusionistic and a diagrammatic style of painting. The works present a strong sense of spatiality: they draw the viewer in, make them part of the painterly universe and wake up new perceptual possibilities. In this sense, they effectively give form to the concept of distance. At the same time, Felix Bode uses a painterly style that distils complex images into simplified, often schematic forms, emphasising the structural aspect of distance as an abstraction. The painterly strategies involved in this process vary from heavily saturated turpentine layers to thick impastos, with the artist skilfully alternating between positive and negative marks in a method that has its roots in printmaking. Through editing, projecting, painting, wiping away, repainting, the image changes under the hands of the artist, while holding a trace of what was originally seen.


The concept of distance and the strain created by modern life interfaces are becoming more important as our accelerationist society injects new forms of discrepancy. From the aerial views seen from a plane, to landscapes of fields, factories and cities that pass by at high speed through the window of a train, to the underground stations spotted on a daily commute, the works evoke a blankness and a sense of losing touch with one’s environment. The fleeting nature of modern images highlights the paradox between a seemingly accessible world and novel distances: diasporic identities that navigate the pull of multiple home lands, the inescapable routine of long travels when living in a city, the burden of long-distance relationships, the systemic barriers that prevent some people from enjoying the same experiences as others. Distance as such is not only a matter of physical separation, but also a structural condition on how one moves through space and relates to the world.


In capturing both the illusion of nearness and the persistence of disconnection, the paintings of Felix Bode offer reflection on how distance—once purely geographic—has become an existential condition of contemporary life.

Wir laden euch nach einer längeren Phase der Umstrukturierung zurück in unsere kleine Gewerbefläche in Britz. Auch weiterhin suchen wir hier, Seite an Seite, Kopf an Kopf, jeden Quadratzentimeter Platz künstlerisch auszuschöpfen. Die Zeit ist knapp und der Raum ebenso! Die großen Geschichten der Hausbesetzerzeiten, der fliegenden Wohnungswechsel und der endlosen Feiereien in den Ohren, sehen wir uns eher mit unattraktiven Dingen wie Steuerabgaben, Quadratmeter-Preisen und Self-Managment konfrontiert. Wenn sich die Geschichte doch auf unangenehme Art und Weise ständig zu wiederholen scheint, sagt eine leise Stimme im Kopf, könnten dann nicht auch Mal angenehme Dinge zurückkommen? Doch während sich alles im Kreis dreht, scheinen Zeit und Raum ein immer weiter zu schrumpfen.In diesen Zeiten der Unsicherheit, in denen ein*e jede*r mit großen Versprechungen um die Ecke kommt, wollen auch wir nicht zu kurz kommen und Mal wieder das volle Potential unserer vielfältigen Ateliergemeinschaft ausschöpfen. Wir wollen neuen alten Geschichten auf den Grund zu gehen, eigene entwerfen oder einfach innehalten. Dafür laden wir euch ein, trotz Mieten, die sich brav der Inflation anpassen und öffentlichen Geldern, die mit einem Handschwenk im luftleeren Raum verpuffen, das zu tun, was wir am Besten können: sich dem Produktivitätszwang zu widersetzen und gemeinsam zu feiern. &#38;nbsp;EN: After a long period of restructuring, we invite you back to our small Gewerbefläche in Britz. Side by side, head to head, we are still seeking to make artistic use of every square centimeter we have. Time is short and so is space! With the great stories of the squatter days, of a housing market that allowed to change your flat like your panties and of endless techno parties constantly ringing in our ears, we find ourselves instead confronted with unattractive things like tax levies, square meter prices and self-management. If history seems to continually repeat itself in unpleasant ways, says a quiet voice in our heads, why won’t some pleasant things come back for a change? But while everything goes round in circles, time and space seem to slip through our fingers and shrink further and further.In these times of uncertainty, in which everyone tries to outdo the other with even bigger promises, we don't want to miss out and will once again exploit the full potential of our diverse studio community. We want to get to the bottom of new old stories, create our own or simply pause for a moment. Therefore, we invite you to do what we do best, despite rents that dutifully adjust to inflation and public funds that evaporate into a vacuum in a single hand movement: resist the pressure of productiveness and celebrate together.

In March 2025, the new works made in Berlin were exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.
The U6 Series was made at 101 Project Space &#38;amp; Studios, a young artist collective in a self-run space in an emerging part of Berlin. Exploring the system of the city’s underground train connections led to a series of paintings that mirror the urban rhythms and rituals of modern life. The imagery he uses, whether it is the post-industrial landscapes, the patterns of tiles or seats, or the darkness of a tunnel that passes the window at high speed, speaks of disconnection and isolation that is brought on, paradoxically, by the fast connectivity. The adjoining poem was written in connection with the paintings, in a stream of consciousness whilst travelling to the studio on the U6 line.

What seem to us to be the most absent moments of lives,waiting, checking the station sign, tapping our feet (or fingers).This daily ritual for people who live in the city.It’s equally silent as it is loud,tik tak tik tak it moves without you noticing,ZURÜCK BLEIBEN BITTTEE!The force of the train pulls you in and out of your seat, sometimes shuddering when you ride at peak hour.Staring at the faces around you.You easily see 100 faces in a day but you don’t remember any of them, nor do they you.WAAhWAAhWAAhWAAhNow, there is a pair of shoes I like.ZukzukzukzukzukzukzikI feel like a rat rushing through these underground ways and steps,to the bus,It’s actually full of anticipation and excitement,This suspiciously warm seat,These orange tiles,this station is mine!

	Felix Bode gives form and feeling to those deserted spaces of travel, forms we all know and feelings we all process, but are accelerated in time and space. As he himself puts it, "the blankness of images one sees when travelling, lost in thought, and the post-industrial landscapes that pass the window at high speed." Spaces of travel, Marc Auge's non-places, are temporary and seem to never completely solidify in our hearts and in our home. Felix picks a place that never exists completely, as it sits between the place of departure and the one we so long for; and sits between the place of arrival and the place we so much think of.Heimweh, which is family to Heimat (german for the longing for home), is especially sought after in Felix's work. Heimat in art finds nostalgia, beauty, memory and place. We are confronted with its live force every time we seek.In times of increasing far-right nationalism, mirroring the rise of Nazism and fascism, we artists and creatives must continue to redefine Heimat as a concept of togetherness. We sometimes forget that art is our hope to find peace and love, where we craft a place for everybody. It is therefore even more of great importance to take a look at work like Felix's, as it reminds us that there are other and better ways to discuss home and the individual connection between the outer and inner world. That we find time to express ourselves and that we look closer and not create idealized and generalized worlds that bring harm to other. Felix uses photography as a source for his painting. From something that is fixated, he wipes away, and repaints, thereby challenging finality and the absolute, while depth, patience and memory is able to be part.&#38;nbsp;

My practice melds the mediums of oil painting and printmaking and is characterised by an interplay between spontaneity and precision. Using photography is not an end in itself, but rather as a source of inspiration, providing reference material for my research. In the words of Gerhard Richter painting “shows something that isn't there”, something that is not possible through photography alone. 

Through my work, I am reconciling two contradictory notions: the ephemeral and fluid nature of time and the intensity of individual thought and feeling. My paintings depict vast scenes that are detached from the feeling I attribute to them, emphasising the fleeting nature of images in the contemporary world. It is through the process of painting that I connect scenery and inner emotion. 

I am inspired by the blankness of images one sees when travelling, lost in thought, and the post-industrial landscapes that pass the window at high speed. The images I paint are blank stares, gazing into the distance – similar to the feeling of travelling home and being consumed by my thoughts or feelings. The detachment of your inner consciousness and your surroundings intrigues me.

I am particularly drawn to the vehicles that propel us through this ever-shifting world—trams, trains, cars, planes—symbols of societal progress. Just looking at the massive changes that these vehicles have endured through the years is an experience strong enough to open a discussion on how their representation has changed. 

My studio practice is responding to the fastness of the photographic sources. I prefer to use a trial-and-error-based approach than a slow build-up of my work. I am responding to the saturation and prolificacy of images in contemporary society. I cover the surface in thick oil paint and wipe away using solvents and various self-made tools to uncover the bright ground colour. In this manner, the paintings themselves become ‘almost abstractions’ of the images I take, which is inspired by the paintings of Carol Rhodes. Through editing, projecting, painting, wiping away, and repainting, the image changes and holds a trace of what was originally seen.

I like to look at this process as if it would be the specific moment when an image in my head slips away as I try to remember it. I am interested in the properties of images and their very particular transitory status in the contemporary world. The ever-changing mental representation of an image from memory is an element of significant importance in my practice. In the end, each painting is usually adjacent to someone I have met or is present in my life. Their presence continues in the act of painting, and the image can be influenced by thoughts from a different time or space.
